KUALA LUMPUR: The man who was arrested on Thursday for allegedly abusing his girlfriend's baby girl has 13 records for crime and drug-related offences.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zin said a urine test on the 31-year-old also showed that he was positive for drugs.

He confirmed that the man has eight criminal records and another five for drug offences.

"We have obtained a seven-day remand starting today until next June 15.

"Investigations are being conducted under Section 31 (1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, Section 15 (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Regulation 25 of the National Registration Act as someone else's identity card was in his possession," he told a press conference at the city police headquarters here today.

Shuhaily said the investigation also revealed that the suspect, who is unemployed, had known the baby girl's mother and lived with her for the past two months at the Desa Rejang People's Housing Project (PPR) in Setapak here.

"The incident of abuse is believed to have happened because the baby was active and this allegedly led to the actions committed by the suspect."

Wangsa Maju district deputy police chief, Deputy Superintendent D. Saralathan had previously said that the suspect was arrested at an apartment in Jinjang, Sentul, on Thursday.

The police had allegedly beaten the victim until his lips were swollen and both eyes and back were bruised, and the baby was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) for examination and further treatment.

Investigations were conducted by the Sexual, Women and Children's Investigations Division (D11) of the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters.

A video of a 23-month-old baby girl, who is believed to have been abused by her mother's boyfriend in an apartment unit in Setapak here, had gone viral on social media.

Preliminary investigations had found that the baby was beaten for making too much noise and the man continued to harm the baby despite the mother's plea.
