SIMUNJAN: A 62-year-old man was slashed to death in Kampung Lubuk Punggur yesterday by his brother-in-law who was believed to be mentally unstable.

Sapuwan Mohamat was found bleeding profusely lying on the road near his home by one of his children.

The attack was believed to have taken place about 7.40pm.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Wong Tee Kue said police received a report on the incident about midnight today.

"He was believed to have been attacked by his 43-year-old brother-in-law who is believed to be mentally unstable.

"Initial investigations by district Criminal Investigation Department policemen revealed that the attack occurred shortly after the breaking of fast," he said in a statement.

Wong said the victim was rushed to the Samarahan Health Clinic but was pronounced dead there by a medical officer.

He said Sapuwan had sustained injuries to his head and his back.

"We managed to detain the suspect several hours later. From him, we seized a parang which was believed to have been the murder weapon," he said.

Wong said the victim's remains were sent to the Sarawak General Hospital for post-mortem examination.

"We obtained a remand order against the suspect today. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder."
