KUANTAN: Members of the public, especially social media users, have been reminded not to share unverified information or posting offensive comments related to royalty, religion and race.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said social media users should not upload any posting or forward any text, videos or audio recording concerning the royalty, religion and race.

"Text, videos or audio recordings which seem to contain elements of incitement, defamation, insults, obscene contents and vulgar words are categorised as hate content that could jeopardise public order.

"All social media users have to be more responsible and think about the risks and implications before providing their opinions on the various platforms which could be considered a criminal offence," he said in a statement today.

Ramli said forwarding and sharing postings with unsuitable contents could result in users facing charges under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (improper use of network facilities), Sedition Act 1948, Section 500 (criminal defamation), 504 (intentionally insulting a person) and 505 (circulating statement that could cause public fear) of the Penal Code.

"When police conduct investigations and find an individual has committed an offence, then those involved will be produced in court and they might face a deterrent punishment.

"Verify the information and refer to the authorities for confirmation or else just ignore the dubious postings," he said.

It was reported earlier today that police in Selangor detained a 30-year-old man for allegedly threatening the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and insulting the royal institution in a social media posting.

On Nov 21, Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani warned stern action including using the Sedition Act, would be taken gainst those behind social media postings that touched on racial and religious sensitivities.
