SUNGAI PETANI: Police have obtained a four-day remand order against the driver of a Perodua Alza and his passenger who were nabbed after a 25km high-speed chase drama yesterday.
Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Zaidy Che Hassan said police obtained the remand from the Sungai Petani magistrate's court today.
"They are being remanded for four days for further investigations under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
It was reported earlier that the driver and his passenger were detained at Bandar Laguna Merbok here after the chase from the Plus Expressway toll plaza in Sungai Dua yesterday.
The 11.45am incident unfolded when a team of traffic policemen from federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman flagged down the MPV at a roadblock for speeding.
Instead of pulling over, the 23-year-old driver from Padang Besar, Perlis sped off, prompting two policemen to give chase in a Honda Civic patrol car.
The suspect had driven recklessly from Km113 to Km108 of the expressway, exposing other motorists to danger before taking the Sungai Petani Selatan toll plaza exit by ramming past the boom barrier before speeding towards Jalan Lencongan Barat.
The MPV then crashed into a Honda Accord while beating a traffic light at Laguna Merbok, causing the Perodua Alza to crash onto a road railing before hitting a sign post.
The vehicle was sent spinning, causing the front and rear left wheels to burst. The driver and his 21-year-old passenger tried to flee but the pursuing policemen managed to detain them after a brief scuffle.
Police did not find any banned substances upon searching the vehicle but checks showed that the driver from Kampung Padang Mawa Kok Mak, Padang Besar Utara in Padang Besar, Perlis was driving without a licence.
A 19-year-old driver of the Honda Accord who was involved in the crash with the Perodua Alza did not sustain any injury.
