KUANTAN: Tempted to invest her hard-earned savings to purchase shares, a 62-year-old retiree ended up losing RM84,776 within a month without receiving any returns.

The victim from Jerantut patiently waited after her last transaction hoping to receive some returns before realising she was part of a dubious investment scheme.

In the incident on Jan 22, the woman spotted the advertisement to purchase shares offered by a firm known as 'Capacity Investment' on Facebook with promising returns.

Pahang Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Superintendent Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof said the victim texted the company and an individual known as 'Nor Atikah' explained the investment scheme.

"The victim was lured by promises that she only needs to pay RM1,500 and will receive returns up to RM83,400 within three days. For more details, the victim was told to browse through the link for the investment scheme.

"The victim went on to make 13 transactions amounting to RM84,776 to five different bank accounts between Jan 22 and Feb 23. Each time she asked about the returns, the syndicate members told her to deposit more cash to complete the required procedures to qualify to get her money back," he said.

Wazir said after completing the last payment on Feb 23, the victim kept hoping she would gain some profit from the scheme before realising she had been cheated by a non-existent investment scheme. She lodged a police report yesterday.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years and whipping, and a fine if convicted.
