KOTA KINABALU: A husband and wife in a recent viral car chase and shooting incident here were charged with obstructing police from doing their jobs, today.

Mahathir Peer Muhamad, 24, and Liza Nasir, 25, claimed trial to their separate charges before magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles.

The couple were accused of preventing two corporals from carrying out their duty in front of a souvenir market in Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens at 10.15am on Jan 11.

They were charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to two years or a fine or both, upon conviction.

The court fixed Feb 16 and 22, respectively, for their pre-trial case management.

Mahathir was released on RM1,500 bail with two local sureties while Liza was denied bail as she has no valid travel document.

Mahathir was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence while Liza was unrepresented. Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuted the case.

It was reported that police fired two shots at a yellow car in self-defence when the driver tried to run them over in front of a hotel in Sinsuran here.

Police were initially alerted to an argument that broke out in Tanjung Aru about 10.15am. Police arrived at the scene and saw a yellow car fleeing the scene.

While being chased by the police, the vehicle rammed into a traffic island while making a U-turn.

It was believed that the driver then tried to run over the officers with the vehicle in an attempt to escape.

Police were forced to fire two shots at the car in an attempt to stop the driver before the three individuals who were in the vehicle fled on foot.
