GEORGE TOWN: Investigation into an assemblyman from Perak, who was detained here on Thursday after testing positive for drugs, is still ongoing.

Penang Police Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah, when contacted, said the investigation paper under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 would be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor next week for initial reference.

"For now, the case is still under investigation and we are awaiting the pathology report, which usually takes between one and three months to be obtained.

"While waiting, we will refer the investigation paper to the Deputy Public Prosecutor first," he said, adding that the process was also similar for the other 35 people, who were also detained alongside the assemblyman, after testing positive for drugs.

The New Straits Times yesterday reported that the assemblyman, in his 50s, was detained at a family karaoke outlet on the mainland on Thursday night. It is learnt that the restaurant used to be a nightclub and is currently operating using a family karaoke licence.

Police raided the premises and the initial urine test for 36 of the patrons, including the assemblyman, came back positive for drugs.

The assemblyman was remanded for a day and released on police bail.

Mustafa said police have recorded the assemblyman's statement yesterday and was satisfied with the cooperation rendered.

Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming in a statement issued late last night, said he had asked the assemblyman, whom he identified as two-term Pasir Berdamar state representative Terrence Naidu, to submit a written report to the party on his arrest.

Nga said he personally contacted Terence, who confirmed that he was arrested by the police.
