PASIR MAS: Police detained a man and seized 144 bottles of cough mixture believed to contain codeine in an operation along the Pasir Mas highway yesterday.

Pasir Mas police chief Assistant Commissioner Nasaruddin Md Nasir said the 36-year-old suspect was travelling in a car when he was arrested about 5.45pm.

"A police patrol car stopped the suspect's vehicle when it passed the highway and after inspecting the car, they found two big boxes containing the cough mixture.

"They then detained the suspect who is a local," he said in a statement.

Nasaruddin said initial investigations showed that the cough mixture worth about RM1,400 were to be sent to a supplier in Thailand.

He said police believe the suspect was hired by an individual to send the cough mixture to the neighbouring country.

"We believe the suspect was heading to one of the jetties in Rantau Panjang to deliver the items when he was caught," he added.

Nasaruddin said cough mixture received a lot of demand from Thai suppliers of late and this prompted locals to smuggle the item across the border.
