KULIM: Police smashed a drug trafficking ring with the arrest of four pushers, including a couple in three separate raids under 'Ops Tapis' yesterday.

Kulim police chief Superintendent Sazalee Adam said police also seized 350g of heroin and 48g of syabu with a street value about RM24,000 during the arrests.

"In the first arrest about 11am, policemen from Mahang police station arrested a man at an palm oil estate in Kampung Ulu Dingin and seized several small packets of drugs believed to be heroin and syabu.

"Following his arrest, we picked up another man at a separate location in the vicinity and seized several packets of drugs suspected to be heroin and syabu," he told a press conference at the district police headquarters today.

Sazalee said following the arrests, police raided a house in Kampung Bukit Rawa in Sedim seven hours later and arrested a couple, both aged 31.

"The raiding party found several packets of drugs suspected to be heroin and syabu at the house and we believe they were using the premises to process the drugs," he said.

Sazalee said the husband worked as a mechanic while his wife was jobless.

"All three men arrested yesterday were tested positive of drug abuse and had previous record for drug-related offences.

"We have obtained a week-long remand against the suspects and believe they belong to a syndicate which has been selling drugs to addicts in the Mahang and Baling areas," he said.

Police also seized two motorcycles and RM340 cash from the suspects.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

Meanwhile, Sazalee said in total, Kulim police rounded up 53 people aged between 19 and 50-years-old for various drugs-related offences throughout the four-day 'Ops Tapis' operation which began on Saturday.
