KUALA LUMPUR: Labuan member of parliament Datuk Rozman Isli was charged at the Sessions Court here with abuse of power to secure a contract for a company linked to his family members.

The accused who is also Parti Warisan Sabah whip chief, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before Judge Rozina Ayob today.

According to the charge sheet, Rozman was accused of using his position as Labuan Port Authority deputy chairman to secure the Dermaga Merdeka Pelabuhan Labuan employment contract operator for Liberty Port Management Sdn Bhd, in which his father and brother have an interest in the company.

The offence was allegedly committed at the Transport Ministry headquarters, Jalan Tun Hussein, Presint 4, Putrajaya between 2.30pm and 5.30pm on March 23, 2018.

He was charged under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission Act 2009 which carries a maximum 20-year jail term and fine not less than five times the amount or value of the gratification, whichever is higher.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib asked the court to impose RM100,000 bail against the accused.

However, counsel Mohd Rafiq Rashid Ali who represented Rozman pleaded for minimum bail.

The court set RM100,000 bail with one surety and ordered the accused to surrender his passport.

The court set Nov 19 for mention.
