KUCHING: Police busted a football betting-cum-online gambling syndicate operating from a luxury residential area in Jalan Stutong, here on Thursday.

The raids were carried out by the Integrated Task Force, Kuching police headquarters under Op Dadu Khas at 12.45pm.

Kuching police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahsmon Bajah said five male suspects aged from 17 to 25 years old were nabbed while carrying out betting activities on the Euro 2020 football tournament since the middle of last month.

"In addition, the suspects were also found to be involved in online gambling activities.

"Initial investigation found that the syndicate had been raking RM40,000 from their bookie activities and some RM60,000 from their online RM60,000 activities," he said in a statement.

He said police have also confiscated various equipment used to carry out football betting and online gambling operations such as computers, an Apple I pad, five iPhones, a Samsung mobile phone and various other devices.

"The case is being investigated under Section 6 (3) of the Betting Act 1953 which carries a maximum fine of up to RM 200,000 and imprisonment not exceeding five years.

"The case is also being investigated under Section 4 (1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 which provides fines between RM5,000 to RM50,000 and a three -year jail sentence if convicted," he said.
