TUMPAT: An attempt by a man to smuggle about RM7,000 worth of Malaysian subsidised cooking oil, flour and sugar to Thailand was foiled when he was arrested by border enforcement agencies yesterday.

The man was travelling in a car when he was arrested in a joint operation between the State Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry and the General Operations Force (GOF).

State KPDNHEP enforcement officer chief Azanizam Affendi Juri said the suspect was detained at Kampung Bendang Pak Yong about 4.30pm.

"Our team with the help of GOF members decided to follow a car when it passed the area and later directed its driver to stop the vehicle.

"Upon checking on the car, we found 780kg of cooking oil, flour and sugar believed to be smuggled to Thailand," he said in a statement.

He said the subsidised items seized from the suspect's car comprised 340kg of cooking oil, flour (240kg) and sugar (200kg).

"Initial investigations showed that the items would be sent across the border via one of the many illegal jetties here," he said in a statement.

He added that the suspect who is a local, was being held for further investigations.

He said the operation was part of Op Benteng carried out along the Kelantan/Thai border to curb smuggling activities.
