BATU PAHAT: Police arrested a man and seized 1,157 boxes of fireworks in a raid in Pekan Parit Yaani here at 2.30pm yesterday.

The raid under Ops Kontraban was conducted by the 5th Batallion of the General Operations Force (GOF) from Simpang Renggam.

Commanding officer Superintendent Dimin Awang said they also seized 665 boxes of contraband cigarettes of various brands.

"The cigarettes are valued at RM29,261 while the unpaid taxes are valued at RM96,703. The fireworks are valued at RM10,034, making the total seizure worth RM135,998," said Dimin in a statement.

He said the seized items were taken to the Batu Pahat police headquarters for further action and the case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 and Section 135(1) of the Custom Act 1967.

"With the raid, we managed to cripple a syndicate trafficking contraband cigarettes and fireworks in Batu Pahat for the upcoming festive period," said Dimin.
