MELAKA: Police seized illicit cigarettes and liquor worth almost RM54,000 and arrested three people during two raids in Melaka Raya and Ujong Pasir on Friday.

Melaka Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sukri Kaman said the seized cigarettes were worth about RM15,399 and liquor about RM38,508.

He said police acted on a tip off and seized a total of 87 cigarette cartons, 31 liquor cartons and 331 bottles of alcohol comprising various brands.

"During the raid, police also arrested three people, including a woman, all aged between 21 and 28. Checks revealed that one of the men is a liquor distributor while the two others are unemployed," he said.

Sukri said the case was being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive Material, Explosives and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958.

"If convicted, the suspects face a maximum imprisonment not exceeding five years and a fine not exceeding RM500,000 or both."
