TAPAH: A 34-year-old man who was in a hurry to return home for Deepavali, prompting him to drive against traffic on the North-South Expressway here and causing a two-vehicle crash has been remanded for three days beginning today.

The order for his remand was issued by magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan at the Magistrate's Court for an investigation under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.

It was reported yesterday that the man who was travelling from Klang to his hometown Bidor on Wednesday, was leaving the highway at the Sungkai exit at 6.06pm when he saw a conditional movement control order (CMCO) police roadblock after the toll plaza.

In his attempt to avoid the roadblock, the man who was traveling in a Perodua Axia turned back to drive south against traffic on the north-bound stretch.

District Police chief Superintendent Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said the man collided head-on with a Toyota Rush SUV, about 1.4 km south of the Sungkai exit and was also hit by a trailer lorry transporting gloves.

Wan Azharuddin said the driver of the Perodua Axia car was detained at his home in Bidor at about 11am yesterday.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
