PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained a former special officer to a Cabinet minister on suspicion of masterminding the embezzlement of funds for a ministry amounting to RM1.8 million in 2017.

Sources said the 50-year-old man was detained at around 12 noon today at the MACC’s headquarters here when he arrived to testify as part of an investigation into the case.

According to the sources, a preliminary probe found that the suspect was allegedly receiving kickbacks from several contractors in return for equipment procurement projects through direct negotiations with a ministry.

The projects included the supply of aircraft equipment.

"The MACC is also tracking down a number of individuals and suppliers in the country who are suspected of being involved (in the embezzlement)," the sources added.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (Operation) Datuk Seri Azam Baki confirmed the arrest and said the investigation is being conducted under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009.

"The MACC will seek a remand order against the suspect at the Magistrate's Court tomorrow morning," he added.
