SELAMA: A 44-year-old woman, along with her 15-year-old-daughter and 16-year-old son, were arrested on Monday for allegedly abusing her adopted daughters, aged 5 and 6 in Kampung Anak Rambutan, Sungai Bayor in Selama.

The abuse came to light when a nurse from the Sungai Bayor Health Clinic, found cuts and bruises and cigarette burns on the two children’s bodies, during a health check at the kindergarten they attend.

Further checks revealed that there were also pinch marks and cuts on their private parts.

Selama police chief Deputy Superintendant Loo Lian Lai said the nurse also found scars of old injuries on the palm of the 5-year-old and the back of the other girl, believed to be from caning.

"The girls are in a state of trauma. It is learnt that they were previously under the care of the Welfare Department and were adopted by the woman in May 2015.

"The victims were brought to Selama Hospital before being referred to Taping Hospital for further checks by the specialists," he said, adding that the trio are have been remanded until Sunday.

The family's neighbour who wanted to be known as Aminah, expressed shock over the news, saying that she did not know the woman well.

"The family she had just moved in during the past fasting month and did not mingle with the villagers. I heard that they have adopted children but I don't know the details.

"I am shocked to hear the news," said the woman in her 50s when met at her home yesterday.
