TAWAU: A man believed to be a drug pusher was shot three times as he rushed towards police, samurai sword in hand, on Thursday.

Though hit in the chest and knee, the man continued to run towards police before a shot to his right hand finally stopped him in his tracks.

Still alive, he was taken to the district hospital where he was warded. Police later obtained a remand order to detain the man until June 1.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Fadil Marsus said the incident occurred during a raid in Hulu Tingkayu in Brumas, near here, on Thursday.

“The 34-year-old man and a teenager, who were riding a motorcycle, attempted to escape into the forest when police raided the area, but the road led to a dead end. Police had warned them to surrender but they became aggressive and pulled out samurai swords,” he said in a statement.

As the older man attacked, police fired the first two shots, hitting him in the right side of the chest and his left knee. When this did not stop the man, a third shot was fired, hitting him in the right hand and causing him to drop the sword.

He was arrested but the teenager took advantage of the distraction the man caused to make good his escape.

Fadil said police seized two Samurai swords and five small tubes containing syabu.
