PETALING JAYA: Convicted serial rapist Selva Kumar Subbiah will be allowed to return to Malaysia from Canada, but will be closely monitored by police.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said that authorities have ways of monitoring those involved in such criminal offences.

"(According to) our law, if someone has (served) his legal sentence overseas, then it is completed. We do not have the right (to prohibit) him from entering the country," he said.

Khalid added that local police are working closely with Canada on the case, including sharing intelligence and criminal records.

In 1992, Subbiah was sentenced to 24 years in prison after being found guilty of 19 counts of sexual assault, 28 counts of administering a drug or noxious substance, 10 counts of various kinds of assault and a dozen other charges, including extortion.

A Canadian local daily reported that Subbiah will be deported to Malaysia following his mandatory release on Jan 29.
