MIRI: The corporate figure named as the alleged mastermind in the murder of PKR’s Miri branch secretary and activist Bill Kayong will be charged at the magistrate’s court at about 2pm today.

The 45-year-old businessman arrived at the Miri Airport here under heavy police escorts, led by Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Dev Kumar at about 11am.

He is expected to be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

“We had filed an application to cancel his international passport. Later, we gathered information that the businessman had arrived in the Fujian province (in China) after fleeing to Singapore and Melbourne (Australia).

“With the help of Interpol and the Chinese authorities, the latter had detained the businessman and alerted us,” Dev told reporters when met at the airport.

Dev told reporters that the police are still looking for another suspect in connection with the murder.

Kayong, who is also the political secretary to Miri member of parliament Dr Michael Teoh, was gunned down at a traffic light intersection near E-mart supermarket on Jalan Miri-Bintulu near here at 8.20am on June 21.

The suspect left for Singapore from Miri on June 23, about two days after the victim was gunned down.

He had later flew to Melbourne from Singapore on July 3, compelling the police to seek help from Interpol.

It was reported that, on July 15, car repossessor Mohamad Fitri Pauzi, 29, was charged at the magistrate's court here with murdering Kayong.

On the same day, pub owner, Lie Chang Loon, 37, and two other people including Lee, who were previously at large, were charged with abetting with Fitri in the murder.

Lee’s name and identification card number were listed as one of the three people, who were previously on the run in the charge sheet.

The other accused charged with abetting in the murder has been identified as Chin Wui Chung, 50, who was Lee's personal assistant.

Last month, the magistrate's court here had ordered the case to be transferred to the High Court.
