GEORGE TOWN: Chaos marred a vigil for detained Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah here today.

Several unidentified men gate-crashed the gathering attended by about 100 people at the Esplanade at 6.15pm.

One of them barged into the scene to confront one of the speakers, Northern region Bersih coordinator Datuk Toh Kin Woon as he was about to speak to the crowd.

A brief fracas ensued when the man created a stir by lashing out at the election reform group and tried to push himself through.

His attempts however were foiled when policemen arrived and prevented him from interrupting the gathering.

The gathering was halted for about 15 minutes before Toh proceeded to address the crowd.

A team of police’s light strike force stood by to maintain security.

Speakers at the gathering took turns to thanked the police for upholding spublic order.

Among the speakers was Petaling Jaya Utara Member of Parliament Tony Pua.

The gathering took a break at 7.15pm. The crowd re-gathered for a candlelight vigil after the break before they dispersed about 7.30pm.
