GEORGE TOWN: A 39-year-old man was nabbed today for allegedly running amok at an Indian temple here on two occasions.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mior Farid Alathrash Wahid said the man had went on a rampage, purportedly destroying deities at the Sri Raja Madurai Veeram Temple at Jalan Timah here.

Mior said the man had broken six deity statues last week, on Monday and Thursday.

“During the interrogation, the man has claimed he heard an ‘inner’ voice from a so-called deity asking him to commit the offence.

“He claimed to have acted alone,” Mior said.

The district police chief said the man had previous criminal record. One, insulting the modesty of a woman and another, a drug offence.

Mior also said the man would be brought to the magistrate’s court tomorrow where police will seek for his remand.
