GEORGE TOWN: A Hindu temple here has been vandalised for a second time within a week.

The interior of Sri Raja Madurai Veeram temple at Jalan Timah Datuk Keramat had been deliberately damaged again today, following a similar event which occurred on Monday.

Temple chairman Michael Anthony, 52, said the vandalism took place at about 1.30pm.

"The body of three deity statues are now cracked, and many candle holders were smashed.

"The extent of damage is much worse than what happened on Monday," he said when contacted yesterday.

On Monday, the statue of a deity was removed from its base in the temple, which is more than 80 years old.

The head of a deity was also decapitated.

Sri Raja Madurai Veeram temple is the sixth temple in Penang to be vandalised since June.

The Sri Muniswaran temple at Jalan Tunku Kudin here was broken into by three unidentified individuals at 5am on July 10.

Three statues at the temple were destroyed by the vandals.

The first Hindu temple to be vandalised was in Penanti Estate, Ara Kuda on the mainland in early June.
