KUCHING: Police arrested a man and a woman, less than 24 hours after they robbed two shops here on Sunday.

The 21-year-old man and his girlfriend, 24, were apprehended near a shopping mall in Petra Jaya at 11.30am today.

State Criminal Investigations Department chief Datuk Dev Kumar said the suspects were under the influence of drugs when they were intercepted by a police team on patrol.

“The couple admitted to have committed the robberies and most of the stolen items have been recovered from their Perodua Viva that carried a fake registration plate,” he said in a statement.

On Sunday, police said the man, armed with a sickle and his girlfriend, raided a convenience store at Jalan Song Thian Cheok at 4.15pm. They escaped with RM1,284 and two mobile phones.

An hour later, the couple robbed a camera outlet at MJC Batu Kawa located about 9km away.

Dev said during the heist, the man strangled the neck of a female shop assistant and pushed her onto the floor.

“His female accomplice then grabbed a handbag containing RM1,000, identification documents and bank cards. She also took a camera and four mobile phones from the shop.” said Dev.
