MIRI: Former national sprinter, Watson Nyambek, 40, has been presented with a house as a token of appreciation for his contribution to the state and country.

The fully-furnished, single-storey corner terraced house at Vista Perdana Phase 2 Permyjaya here was jointly contributed by the Naim Group of Companies and Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd (SPNB).

A mock key was presented to Watson, who held an 18 year-long record in the 100 metre sprint, during a ceremony held at a hotel here today.

The key was jointly presented by Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem, Naim Group chairman Datuk Abdul Hamid Sepawi and SPNB chairman Datuk Dr Abdul Latif Ahmad.

According to Bernama, Watson has been living with his mother-in-law at Riam Road here since 2010, and now looks forward to celebrating Christmas in his own home for the very first time.

"First and foremost I must thank the Chief Minister for keeping his promise after meeting me early this year," he told Bernama, adding that Adenan had asked what assistance the state government could give him in recognition of his contribution to the state and country.

"I told him I need a house, and he promised to look into my plight. (But) I never expected it would be so soon!” he said excitedly.
