SUNGAI PETANI: Twenty-nine members of various secret societies were among 741 people rounded up by Kedah police under Ops Cantas Khas held for 10 days since Aug 6.

Kedah police chief Datuk Zamri Yahya said the men, in their 20s, were members of Geng 36, Geng 35, Geng 08 and Geng 45 who were found to have committed various offences,

including under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt, the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and also Section 43 of the Societies Act 1966.

“During the period, we inspected 3,866 individuals. Ops Cantas Khas's objective is to take action against gangster elements including under the firearms and drugs abuse Act,” he told newsmen this afternoon.

He added that during the operation, police also seized various weapons, including nine knives, six parangs, two kerambits, one sword and one knuckle fist.

He said a total of 2,570 vehicles were also inspected during the operation.

“The operation focused on gangster activities in Kuala Muda, Kulim and Kota Star districts since most serious criminal cases occurred here. However, we will continue

the operation in other districts as well,” he said.

In an unrelated case, Zamri said police arrested five men from Geng 36 at a house in Bandar Laguna Merbok on Aug 8 and seized 52 packets of substances believed to be heroin weighing about 65.18grams.

Also found were a scale, packaging equipment, knives and also a Honda Accord that was reported stolen in Kuala Lumpur.

He said the five men, aged between 29 and 42, were remanded until Aug 17 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Section 148 of the Penal Code,

Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

“We are also looking for seven men believed to be members of Geng 36, to facilitate investigation into a case in Bandar Puteri Jaya on Aug 10, where a man suffered serious

injury to his hand,” he said.

He said the seven were known as P. Navindren, 21, P. Sridharan (Sri), 22, R. Naresh Kumar, 27, Lim Ah Siong, 28, K. Sukumaran, 29, K. Kogulan, 32, A Colenthries, 33.

He said in the incident, the man suffered severe injuries to his hand when he was attacked by a group of men.
