KUALA LUMPUR: CyberSecurity Malaysia, the national cyber security specialist agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) yesterday celebrated, for the second year, the Malaysian media at a special 'Appreciation Ceremony' in Kuala Lumpur.

Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau also presented CyberSecurity certifications to 16 organisations that were considered as critical national information infrastructures. The certifications are based on ISO/IEC15408 for products security, and the Malaysia Trustmark.

The minister said this certification is the right step in the development of the cyber security industry in Malaysia that will allow the country to be more competitive, and move from a technology consumer to a technology producer, as well as create more job opportunities.

"Coordination and prioritisation of cyber security R&D activities will be enhanced to spur the development and commercialisation of cyber security related products and services to achieve this objective," he added.

The minister also said that the media is a powerful influencer in creating and shaping public opinion, and is capable of contributing to national development and societal well-being.

"The media plays a vital role in informing the general public about events and issues that affect them, particularly in those areas in which the public do not possess direct knowledge or experience," he said.

The ‘Most Supportive Print Media (Newspaper)’ category went to Berita Harian. Bernama bagged the ‘Most Supportive Online Media’ award while Computerworld won the ‘Most Supportive Print Media (Magazine/ Periodicals)’ category.

CyberSecurity Malaysia feted six journalists with the ‘Most Supportive Journalist’ award. Winners included Wan Noor Hayati Wan Alias of Berita Harian and Afiq Hanif of Harian Metro.
