KUANTAN: Residents in flood-prone areas in Pahang will now be able to receive alerts on the possibility of floods at least three days earlier.

Pahang Natural Disaster Relief Committee chairman Datuk Seri Muhammad Safian Ismail said co-operation between the state Meteorological Department (MET) and state department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) has enabled the alert system to give people in affected areas ample time to prepare.

Safian explained that MET will observe the weather and alert DID on any possibility of heavy rain, which may raise the water level of several rivers in the state.

"DID will then monitor the water level at rivers such as Sungai Lembing and Sungai Tembeling. The committee will be informed so that alerts can be disseminated to the residents in flood-prone areas like Sungai Isap in Kuantan, Maran, Temerloh and Bera.

"By doing so, residents will be able to prepare for evacuation of their families and valuables," he said after chairing the flood preparation meeting today.
