PONTIAN: ABOUT 800 residents of Kampung Sri Mahkota here are hoping that the 500m road leading to their village will be upgraded and installed with streetlights.

The residents of the village, also known as Kampung Orang Asli Jalan Parit Ibrahim, hoped that the authorities would look into their plight as the road, which is partly covered by foliage, is hazardous at night.

Village community leader Osman Bakar, 55, said the villagers were grateful for the government’s assistance in providing facilities such as homes, tarred roads, mosques, utilities, and a community hall that is being built.

“The amenities have made life easier for the villagers who are fishermen and odd job workers without a fixed monthly wage.

“However, we are worried about driving on the road at night as it dangerous without streetlights and some parts of the road are covered by foliage,” he said.

According to Osman, the road is frequently used by schoolchildren and is risky for them at night.

Sri Mahkota Village Security and Development chairman Samad Hussein, 41, said the landowner whose plot lies next to the tarred road, should clear the foliage from his land which is obstructing road users.

“Many villagers have come across snakes, and a number of motorcyclists have crashed into wild boars or other animals while using the road at night.

“Without streetlights, the road is a cause for concern among the village folk as schoolchildren use the road after tuition classes at night,” he said.
