MALACCA: A SURVEY by local non-governmental organisation Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) showed motorists in luxury foreign registered vehicles opted for subsidised RON95 fuel instead of filling up with the unsubsidised RON97.

The three hour survey from 8am was done at selected petrol stations here. It showed about 80 motorists in luxury cars and Singapore registered vehicles had purchased the RON95 fuel.

Malacca JMM director Hamzah Abdul Wahab said the survey also showed a petrol station in Cheng only sold RON95 fuel to its customers and the highly subsidised fuel was purchased by those in the high-income bracket and foreigners.

Hamzah said JMM had monitored the use of subsidised fuel among consumers, which was meant for low-income groups.

“We found that only RON95 petrol was sold and everyone, including those in luxury cars and foreign registered vehicles, was filling up their tanks without question.”

Hamzah said allowing subsidised fuel to be enjoyed by all motorists defeated the government’s implementation of the fuel subsidy system.

He said JMM would propose new mechanisms to overcome the abuse of subsidised fuel.

“We will continue to monitor and fight petrol and diesel subsidy abuse which is causing the government to lose millions of ringgit.

“JMM Malacca will continue to mobilise our members at selected petrol stations across the state and monitor the sale of R0N95 petrol to luxury vehicle drivers and the data obtained will be forwarded to the government.”
