GEORGE TOWN: THE year-end school holidays are here again with schoolchildren looking forward to indulging in lots of activities.

Sixteen kids will be showcasing their artworks in the “Kid World Art Exhibition” at Acheh Art Row (AAR) tomorrow.

Organised by Kuala Lumpur-based Locus Art, the exhibition will be launched at 4pm at 20, Lebuh Acheh.

AAR event organiser and HR administrator Lillian Endin Bau said the exhibition was held to showcase the creativity of the children who have the potential to shine with proper guidance and exposure.

“It’s a good opportunity to promote the artworks of these young artists, mostly from Penang, during the holidays,” she said.

Brendan Beh Wye Hsien, 15, from Sungai Petani, said he took up art as a hobby two years ago and taught himself to make sculptures out of discarded materials.

He was accompanied by his mother, Datin Michelle Gan, herself an artist.

Beh showed a creation of his which resembles a crossbow, complete with arrows, and demonstrated how it works.

Meanwhile, Lau Zhi Yi, 6, draws animals and dinosaurs he sees in books or on television with a pencil.

His tutor, art teacher Apple Yong Siew Ping, said she had brought seven of her pupils to exhibit their artworks.

“As an art teacher, I advise them on how to use basic colours and leave them to develop their own style,” said Yong who runs the Artspace Drawing Centre in Permatang Pauh.

Tomorrow, Yong will be holding a workshop on drawing and painting using materials provided by the gallery.

Charmaine Chua Jing Min, 14, who has been painting for a few years now using acrylic as her favourite medium, said she would paint any object that comes to mind.

Dawnie Choo Thoong, 14, a self-taught artist, says she likes portraiture and figurative drawings and shows exceptional promise. Her works will be on display for the first time at the exhibition.

The other young artists are Clarence Chuah Jia Xuan, Mooi Qi Chen, Choo Ming, Yong Yuen Hui, Tan Wan Qi, Lee Shan Yong, Lee Hsuen, Tan Lee Sin, Lam Zhi Yi, Toh Yi Wan, Toh Yi Xuan, Lee Rou Xuan and Tan Song En.

The exhibition is on until Dec 28.

The gallery is open daily, except on Monday, from 9am to 6pm.
