KUALA LUMPUR: Consumers should be more proactive by reporting dirty eateries in the city to ensure restaurant owners practise good hygiene in preparing food and cleanliness seriously.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said since the first inception of short messaging system (e-adu) in 2011 by City Hall, only 135 complaints on unclean food premises had been received so far.

"Therefore we urge the patrons to monitor the eateries and lodge a complaint if they find the food premise they visited was at below satisfactory level.

He said last year, 481 dirty eateries were ordered to close temporarily for various offences under Section 11, Food Act 1983.

"City Hall also has issued almost 1,938 compounds for various offences under the Food Establishment Licensing Bylaw 1985," he said after a programme with PT 80 and Jalan Rotan, Kampung Attap, traders here today.

The public can lodge a report by sending a SMS to 15888.
