IPOH: Datuk Yeoh Kian Teik, the father of Hollywood actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, died yesterday following a short illness.

His wife, Datin Janet Yeoh, said her 89-year-old husband died at 6.15pm.

“His remains will be placed at our home in Lebuh Lasam,” she said.

Kian Teik’s remains will be taken to the Tanjung Rambutan Memorial Park on Sunday.

The cortege will leave at 1pm.

Janet said Michelle had returned to Ipoh three days ago to be with her father in his final days.

State MCA chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon expressed his sadness over Kian Teik’s death.

“His death is a great loss to the community, especially the Chinese,” he said, describing Kian Teik as a prominent lawyer and community leader.

“He was someone who dared to speak up on issues, hence he was well respected by the people.”

Dr Mah said Kian Teik, despite his age, still held positions in Chinese non-governmental organisations.

“Being a founding member of MCA, the party will drape the party flag over Kian Teik’s coffin.”

A St Michael’s Institution old boy, Kian Teik studied law at Lincoln’s Inn in the United Kingdom.

He took over his father’s transport company, which was responsible for the setting up of the town’s bus services.

Kian Teik also set up Sri Maju, an executive coach service, in 1975.
