JOHOR BARU: WHILE most of us would think that it would be sports enthusiasts who would hang out at a sports cafe, Magnum Sports Cafe would make one think again.

Couch potatoes and food lovers would also have an awesome time at the cafe at LG 9, in Little Red Cube, Puteri Harbour, here.

Fronting the harbour marina, the cafe offers a beautiful view and a great ambience.

Culinary director chef Stanley Yim, meanwhile, dishes up delicious Western and fusion creations.

The Singapore-born Yim, who has carved quite a name for himself in the food industry, has followers who swears by his food.

He said the menu featured good food at prices that would not burn a hole in your pocket.

Yim described Magnum Sports Cafe as not just another sports cafe, but as an interactive sports lifestyle hub that aimed to serve the best food and sports entertainment in town.

“The cafe is not just designed to cater to a certain group, but to everyone, including families, who can bond over good food and cheer for their favourite team,” he said.

Magnum’s extensive menu includes soup and salad sets that come in three sizes — Kids, Regular and Magnum, at prices ranging from RM9 to RM25.

Soups of the day include a silky pumpkin soup that is delicious to the last drop.

If pumpkin is not your thing, there are choices of mushroom or cheddar beef soup, which are equally appetising.

Those who are health-conscious can choose from a selection of garden salads that are served with balsamic vinegar and nachos.

Starter meals such as fried fish sticks, Tupelo chicken tenders, chips and salsa, steak fries, onion rings and hot wings are priced from RM18 to RM40.

A must-try is the chips and salsa dip. The dip is fresh-tasting and flavourful with cilantro and diced tomatoes.

Magnum also serves an array of stone-baked pizzas. The one taking centre stage is currywurst, a German-influenced spicy curry ketchup pizza that comes with toppings of onions and sliced bratwurst sausage, tomato paste with curry powder, seasoned with curry and other spices. It is best savoured with Magnum’s rootbeer float.

Magnum’s pasta selection includes spaghetti bolognese, linguine basil pesto, fettucine alfredo and aglio olio.

Burgers are also aplenty. These come with a serving of chips on the side and are priced from RM25 and RM40.

There are cheese burger, crispy chicken burger, tropical chicken burger, signature Magnum burger and the Mighty Magnum Burger.

The Mighty Magnum Burger has double patties topped with caramelised onions, ground spices such as cumin and coriander, ground chilli, fajita spice mix , mustard, chopped fresh herbs, lettuce, pickles and black pepper for added zest.

If burgers are not to your liking, try the sausages. There are smoked chicken beddar with cheddar, foot-long American-style chicken or German-styled thuringer bratwurst.

On weekends, Magnum serves brunch, which has American breakfast, Waldorf salad and breakfast burritos. Brunch is priced from RM14 to RM26,

For feasts of the eyes, the cafe also has a 100inch LED television screen that shows live sporting events including English Premier League football matches, Formula 1, NBA basketball championships, golf tournaments, and badminton matches.

The stage area features live performances, open-mic nights and stand-up comedians.

There is a pool table, foosball table, air hockey, electronic darts, computer games, arcade machines and a Nintendo Wii console.

For those nostalgic for the past, there are games such as Pac Man and Spot the Difference.

The cafe offers indoor and alfresco seating for up to 121 persons.

It is open daily from 11am to 2am.
