GEORGE TOWN: A GROUP of volunteers and social activists who go under the name of Penang Stop Human Trafficking Campaign (PSHTC) held a press conference recently to highlight the lives of migrants, refugees and their journeys.
The matter is featured in a series of pictures of foreigners who worked in Penang, which are on display until today at the former Hin Bus Depot in Jalan Gurdwara here.
The event is part of the Local Democracy Festival which carries the theme Expressing the Migrant and Refugee Journey. It is organised by Suaram Penang.
PSHTC members James Lochhead, Angeline Loh, Kim Khaira and Andrew Wong spoke on the activities, objectives and goals of the group.
Lochhead said migrant and refugee communities who came from many corners of the region had become a part of Penang’s history.
“We dare say all of us are descendants of migrants or refugees and Penang is certainly the product of their contributions — of the journeys of migrants or refugees over the centuries,” he said.
The activities included an exhibition of photographs by K.G. Krishnan and Beatrice Leong and a booklet of photographs taken by migrant worker Saiful Islam on living and working conditions in Malaysia.
A documentary film entitled Berlari/Running by director Mien Lor was also shown to the press.
The group organised a fundraising party and will host an art jamming session for a refugee kindergarten today. The jamming session starts at 10am.
