KUALA LUMPUR: With the world community mourning over the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, the setting up of an international investigation team for the tragedy should be expedited.

Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said it was important for a team to be sent swiftly to the wreckage site and for forensic teams to begin identifying the victims.

He said the Ukrainian and Russian authorities must give an assurance for the safety of the international investigation team at the wreckage site near Donestk, an area in Ukraine bordering Russia.

“It is important to secure the site so that the investigation can be carried out freely and safely, without any tampering of evidence.

“Once the investigation points to the responsible party, then the shooting must be deemed as a crime against humanity,” said Lee.

He said that it was appropriate to convene an emergency parliamentary session to express condemnation against those involved in downing the aircraft and to demand justice for Malaysia.

Lee said Malaysia appreciated the outpouring of sympathy coming from all over, but there was a pressing need to find justice in the face of tragedy.

He also urged Malaysians to stand behind the national flag carrier in this difficult time, as it was still untangling the mystery of flight MH370, which had still has not been recovered.
