GEORGE TOWN: ART collectors, old and new, have a bargain on their hands in getting the best value for their money in a group exhibition at the Galeri Seni Mutiara, which ends on Sunday.

Aptly entitled “Minimum Yet Optimum”, the exhibition, which is held annually, brings together established and upcoming artists to display their works in a show of humility, camaraderie and respect.

A total of 45 artworks by 23 artists, all priced at not more than RM1,000, offer art lovers and collectors a pick from a wide choice of media and styles in every genre.

Gallery director Koay Soo Kau said the senior artists have shown they were not above themselves in parting with their artworks at such a low price, while the younger set has the chance to exhibit their works alongside some of the most acclaimed artists in the northern region.

“The collection offers young collectors a chance to acquire quality paintings at such a low price while seasoned collectors can buy the works of young artists.

“The paintings come in different styles and sizes.

“The artists are also free to express themselves on any topic and medium.”

Koay said this collaboration showed the senior artists are game enough to give the much needed boost to their junior counterparts.

Guest-of-honour Kebun Bunga assemblyman Cheah Kah Peng said he was impressed with the plethora of artworks which are on sale at such low prices.

“This collaboration between two generations of artists speaks well for the art fraternity and augurs well for the future of art in this northern region.

“There are so many collectible works on show at affordable prices, with such a good mix of works by accomplished artists and highly talented young ones that collectors may not stop at just one purchase.

“Each of the artists has his or her own style and favourite topic, which have brought great excitement to the buyers’ market,” said Cheah, who is also an artist of note.

The gallery is open daily from 11am to 6pm. Admission is free.
