SHAH ALAM: Imprisoned former opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim filed a qazaf report, via his family members, against lawyer Tan Sri Shafee Abdullah today.

His wife, Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who filed the report on his behalf, said Shafee had accused Anwar of sodomosing Saiful Bukhari Azlan without bringing forward four witnesses or a sworn statement by the accused (Anwar) as required by Islamic law.

"This report is made to uphold the justice and rights of Anwar who has been victimised with evil intentions to tarnish his reputation," she said after filing the report at the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) building.

She said Shafee had openly slandered Anwar on Feb 17 this year at a dialogue programme organised by Akademi Kepimpinan Kapten Hussein at Kelana Jaya by accusing Anwar of sodomising Saiful.

She urged JAIS to investigate Shafee's statement under Section 36 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995.

Qazaf means to wrongfully accuse a Muslim of adultery or homosexuality without producing four witnesses.

Also present was Anwar's daughter, Nurul Izzah, who reminded those present that Shafee's actions in attacking the accused after sentencing was also not ethical under the civil court system.

"In Malaysia, the actions of the ruling government seems as if they do not respect and do not understand that throwing out accusations of sodomy is a big sin in Islam," she told reporters.

She added that the family was also waiting for action to be taken by JAIS with regards to earlier qazaf reports against Shafee that was filed by university undergraduates and non-governmental organisations.
