ALOR STAR: MENTERI Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir and Environment, Chinese Community Affairs, Health and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Dr Leong Yong Kong celebrated the Kedah Mid-Autumn Festival with more than 5,000 people here on Sunday night.

Kedah Chinese Assembly Hall president Datuk Cheng Lai Hock, members of the state legislative assembly as well as members of parliament attended the festival, which fell on Monday.

It started with a walk around the Star City area with members of the public and young children carrying brightly-lit and coloured lanterns. The crowd moved towards Stadium Darul Aman where more festivities took place.

The Mid-Autumn festival, which is synonymous with the baking of mooncakes and lighting of lanterns, is an important celebration for Chinese all over the world.

Mukhriz, who took part in the parade, said the festival reminded him of his childhood when he used to exchange lanterns with his siblings and friends.

“It shows how our country has integrated different elements and how we can live as a multiracial community.

“I wish to thank the Kedah Chinese Assembly Hall for organising this festival for Kedah folk.

“It has played a big role in seeing to the welfare and development of the Chinese in Malaysia. I also wish to thank Datuk Dr Leong Yong Kong for making today’s programme a success.”
