SUNGAI PETANI: The government will try its best to bring back the remains of Malaysians who died in the Malaysia Airline flight MH17 tragedy to the country for a proper funeral.

However, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said the final decision would be made after taking into account all factors, such as the condition of the remains.

Jamil said the 10 imam sent by Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) to Ukraine on Friday would assist with the religious guidance and funeral rites of the remains there.

“The team of imam, which include two ustazah, has been equipped with adequate equipment as well as useful tips from experts and Jakim’s research division on funeral preparations.

“With the help of the Muslim community in Ukraine and the armed forces, we believe that the ritual of bathing and shrouding of the bodies of Muslim victims can be carried out smoothly,” he said in a press conference here yesterday.

Jamil also said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had called for mosques in the country to hold special prayers for the nation’s peace and safety.
