THE new Honda Vario 160 broke cover at the recent Malaysian MotoGP round in October. Recently, the media got the first taste of the new Vario at its official launch in Shah Alam's Go Kart track in Batu Tiga.

It is all new from head to toe but the family resemblance to the outgoing model is apparent.

The biggest differences are under the skin. A new underbone chassis, dubbed the eSAF (enhanced Smart Architecture Frame) is lighter and stronger. The new engine, dubbed the eSP+, has been tweaked to 157cc while still retaining the SOHC, four valve, liquid-cooled specifications.

It produces 15.3 hp @ 8,500 rpm and 13.8 Nm of torque @ 7,000 rpm. Our short ride around the track reveals that the power unit is still as smooth as ever with a bit more poke lower in the rev range than the previous model.

Handling is as dependable as ever with the new frame providing a tad more stability and poise in corners compared to previously.

The track layout made more demand upon handling and acceleration rather than outright speed so we are unable to determine whether the new model is faster at the top end. The increase in horsepower over the 150 (13.1 hp) should translate to a better top speed.

Brakes are updated as well on the new Vario. The front disc is now equipped with ABS, a much appreciated update since small wheels and wet Malaysian roads are not good friends.

The front is very controllable and the rear disc, while not equipped with ABS, is an able companion to the front. Both wheels are 14 inches in diameter and shod in 100/80 and 120/70 tubeless tyres.

Suspension duties are shared between a telescopic front fork and a single, preload adjustable, rear shock in the rear.

The new Vario 160 is equipped with a Smart Key system which features an alarm and a call back function. Underseat fuel tank holds 5.5 litres.

Other equipment includes USB-A charging port, a digital LCD display and 18-litres of storage under the seat. Lighting is fully LED all round.

It weighs in at 117 kg and has a seat height of 778 mm.

The base model is priced at RM9,998 and comes in three colours – Vivacity Red, Pearl Nightfall Blue and Sword Silver Metallic. The Matte Charcoal Grey Metallic version is priced at RM10,298 and will be available from February 2023 onwards.

A two-year or 20,000 km warranty against manufacturing defects comes as standard.
