AS Malaysians go through the recovery phase of the pandemic, they have been hit by the travel bug and there seems to be no sign of local tourism slowing down since borders reopened back in April.
Based on a survey in 2020, more than 75 per cent Malaysians said that they were intending to travel domestically once the movement control order (MCO) was lifted.
Since movement restrictions were relaxed in April 2022, families have been traveling to reunite and celebrate the festivities and many are looking forward to explore Malaysia and enjoy the rich experiences and local food, and Merdeka offers them a chance to do that.
With Merdeka just around the corner and in celebration of the National Day theme 'Keluarga Malaysia Teguh Bersama', here are five great ideas to not only celebrate a freeing Merdeka, but also celebrate as one family and one nation together:
1. Plan a freeing road trip
Getting in a car and hitting the road is a great way to explore our country especially during Merdeka when you can see the Jalur Gemilang flying high all over the country.
The best ways to enjoy a smooth road trip no matter where you plan to go this National Day is to ensure you: Plan your route with adequate stops to break the journey and ensure you get enough rest toremain alert while driving, stock up on water and snacks before hitting the road to keep everyone occupied, and create a road trip playlist with everyone's favourite tunes and maybe even inspire a "car-aoke" session.
2. Experience your freedom outdoors at Tugu Negara and enjoy the KL skyline light up with fireworks
Take a trip to the National Monument and walk down memory lane. As you relive history, capture pictures for the gram and learn about the sacrifices made by our military forces for our freedom.
For picture worthy places, also visit the Perdana Botanical Garden, KL Bird Park, or the Asean Sculpture Garden and truly appreciate the rich biodiversity of our country.
Watch the sky light up with fireworks at midnight on the KL skyline in commemoration of the National Day. Inspire your Merdeka spirit with fireworks at one of these places: Taman Tasik Titiwangsa and Changkat Semantan in Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Permai in Cheras, and Pahang's Genting Highlands.
3. National Day Parade on 31st August at Dataran Merdeka
Liven up the festive atmosphere at Dataran Merdeka during the National Day Parade and experience the freedom that was fought for us to enjoy the liberties we have today.
Expect a host of activities lined up to inspire the patriotic spirit within us and connect with like-minded Malaysians from across the country.
While in the heart of the city, you'll be just a stone's throw away from fantastic food and spectacular sights so take this time to explore the capital and soak up all it has to offer.
4. Merdeka from hassle before you put the pedal to the metal
Failing to plan is planning to fail. No matter where you decide to celebrate National Day this year, remember to first check your car and schedule a service if necessary.
Previously, studies showed that more than 50% of Malaysian drivers lack knowledge on basic car maintenance.
Here is a checklist to keep handy so you can conduct checks independently to ensure a smooth and seamless drive:
●Steering – make sure the steering system (wheel) is working smoothly while maneuvering
●Brakes – take note of any unusual sound when braking.
●Fluid levels – brake fluid, engine oil, coolant fluid and wiper tank.
●Tires – check tire tread depth by placing a 20-sen coin in the tread and if you can read the date on the coin clearly, it's time to change your tires. Remember to also ensure tire pressure is at the required level.
●Battery – check on the health of the battery and charge it with the Bosch C7 battery charger if required.
●Wipers – clean and functional wiper contributes to a clearer visibility. Take time to change them if they are worn out.
●Lights – visual check on all the lights to make sure they are functional.
