SPROUTING out of a former sports complex in Section 19 Petaling Jaya is a new event space. Positioning itself as PJ's next hotspot, it boasts a large hall and will see the opening of 12 new restaurants.

Petite Maison, French for "small house", which already has seven outlets in the Klang Valley, is the first food and beverage establishment to greet patrons within the vicinity. Promoting itself as a family-style restaurant, this outlet is their latest, as attested by the abundance of congratulatory bouquets lined outside.

With its steel windows and doors, as well as sleek clean lines, there's an "industrial" feel about the space. The vibes are both welcoming and comforting at the same time. Patrons get to choose where they want to dine — either indoors or al fresco.

Seeing a huge family gathering taking up most of the indoor space when I arrive, I decide to park myself at the outdoor section. Fortunately, despite the muted weather and humidity, it is still comfortable to dine outdoors.

DIVERSE SPREAD

 Caesar salad.

It's already midday and suffice to say, I'm a ravenous. I opt for the Caesar salad as appetiser. There's something about Caesar salads that makes it a safe and familiar comfort food — and this version did not disappoint.

Perusing the menu, I decide on penne pasta in arrabiata sauce with soft-shell crabs for my main course. There's an unmistakable hint of black pepper in the sauce, but thankfully, it's not too overpowering. The rocket leaves and parmesan bits add a nice crisp flavour to the dish.

Next to catch my sight is the corned beef hash sourdough. As the names suggests, this dish comprises corned beef served atop a slice of sourdough bread with rocket leaves and poached egg, with parmesan shavings. A simple salad is served separately in a ramekin on the side.

And as if that isn't enough to satiate my hunger, I decide to sample dessert next. Anyway, who was it that said no matter how full one gets, there's always room for dessert!

SATISFYING SOJOURN

 A wide assortment of pastries.
A wide assortment of pastries.

Like a giddy little schoolgirl, I find myself excitedly surveying the pastry counters right next to the cashier. I beam happily at the tantalising sight of mouth-watering pastries, which range from crispy, fluffy croissants to rich puffs and delectable tarts.

 Blueberry financier.
Blueberry financier.

I'm a huge fan of blueberry, so of course, I decide to opt for the delicious-looking blueberry financier and blueberry cream cheese tart. The latter is a clear winner, as the financier bordered slightly on the dry side.

It's really a nice surprise to note that the desserts here are not overly sweet, as some tend to be in other restaurants. As expected of any good cafe, house-brewed coffee is also served here, which goes very well with the desserts.

For now, Petite Maison appears to satisfy on many fronts in this burgeoning space that has the potential to be the next culinary and event hub. Petite Maison, the French-inspired bakery-café, certainly feels like a lovely hideaway tucked in a little well-known tranquil corner of Section 19.

Take my word: It's certainly worth checking out!
