IF a picture says a thousand words, what can a collection of more than 150 photographs tell you?

"They tell of 1100 years of cultural and historical heritage of the Russian Muslims that spread from Kaliningrad from the west to Nakhodka in the east, from the north where temperatures are sub zero to the south.

"The photographs also show the lifestyle of 25 million of Russian Muslims," says Russian Federation deputy chairman of religious board of Muslims, Rushan Abbyasov at the opening of Traditions of Islam in Russia exhibition at Islamic Art Museum in Kuala Lumpur.

Held from today till end of the year, the "travelling" exhibition is held in conjunction with the 1100th anniversary of adoption of Islam by the Russian people of Volga Bulgara.

The photograph exhibition is divided into eight parts, each representing the federal districts of Russia, featuring the country's magnificent mosques, religious and national holidays, creativity, traditional costumes and fine cuisine of the Muslim peoples.

One of the most important sections of the exhibition is devoted to Russian-Malaysian relations, key milestones, common achievements, developed dialogue and close contacts between the two countries at the state and religious-social level.

The exhibition was previously held in Brunei, Indonesia and Saudi, and it will move to Singapore after its Kuala Lumpur site.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Russian ambassador to Malaysia Naiyl Latypov, Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) deputy director of operations Datuk Dr. Sirajuddin Suhaimee and Islamic Art Museum head curator Dr. Heba Nayel Barakat.
