A 2021 consumer healthcare survey found that seven out of 10 Malaysians suffer from tooth sensitivity*.

Tooth sensitivity occurs when the protective layer around the teeth, known as enamel, wears down and exposes the inner part of the tooth, called dentin.

The same survey indicated that despite tooth sensitivity being a common problem, up to 61 per cent of respondents were not aware of it.

Tooth sensitivity can be caused by multiple factors, including lifestyle habits and dental care mistakes.

COMMON DENTAL CARE MISTAKES

One of the most prevalent dental care mistakes is brushing teeth too hard or too frequently.

Overzealous brushing may wear away the tooth's enamel, leading to pain or discomfort when it comes into contact with hot, cold or acidic food.

Those suffering from tooth sensitivity should brush their teeth twice daily with toothpaste made for sensitive teeth and stay away from foods that trigger the issue.

It is also important to avoid brushing teeth horizontally, as it may squeeze the gums, causing teeth to hurt or develop dull pain over time.

The proper way to brush teeth is at a 45° angle with a back-and-forth motion, on the outer surface of teeth, gum line and inside of teeth. It is also recommended for individuals to brush their tongue and floss right after brushing their teeth.

Other common dental care mistakes include putting off dental issues and not going for regular dental checkups.

When it comes to dental issues, early prevention is better than cure. Small and seemingly insignificant issues like a minor toothache could be a sign of something more severe, and could worsen if left untreated.

Regular visits to the dentist once every six months are beneficial in upkeeping dental health and attending to issues that require immediate attention.
