KUALA LUMPUR: The colourful celebration of Malaysian performing arts, DFP Seni Festival is back this July.

Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) is proud to present DFP Seni Festival 2024 on July 20, and promises once again an extravaganza of music and performing arts which will span three months.

This unique platform will showcase diverse local talents and exciting cultural entertainment by renowned arts groups and orchestras.

DFP chief executive officer Hassina Begam Abdul Gani said in a recent statement that this was the sixth time DFP was organising the festival and it is aimed at showcasing traditional Malaysian arts to the world.

Prior to this, DFP has been collaborating with various cultural groups and artists to preserve, nurture and promote the rich diversity of Malaysia's invaluable art forms.

"Since its inception in 1998, DFP has remained steadfast in its artistic objective to present great performances by hosting many acclaimed artists. This year's festival is a testimony of its commitment to nurture an appreciation towards our traditional music and arts, providing a platform for timeless and inspiring performances for Malaysians from all walks of life," said Hassina.

The festival will commence with the artistry of Jit Sin High School's Chinese Orchestra at 8.30pm on July 20.

Themed Dialogue of the Songs of Chu, the concert will showcase orchestral Chinese music with a mesmerising dialogue between the erhu and the cello, featuring the talents of Tan Rou Yee and Lim Sing Yee respectively.

Well into its 50th anniversary, this orchestra has garnered accolades in Malaysia and abroad over the years.

Arts enthusiasts will be treated to a traditional theatre of Mek Mulung at 8.30pm on July 27.

Titled DFP Muzikal: Mek Mulung Putera Cahaya Bulan, this 500-year-old theatre presentation is DFP's collaboration with the National Culture and Arts Department and Kumpulan Mek Mulung Seri Mahawangsa.

It will feature actor Arja Lee in the lead role, in an exciting tale of love and tragedy.

The festival continues with a traditional Minangkabau folk theatre called Randai at 8.30pm on Aug 10.

This traditional theatre from Negri Sembilan will showcase a delightful blend of cultural richness and energetic dance by talented children trained by Pewara Dance Theatre, a group of alumni and staff of the National Arts, Culture and Heritage Academy (Aswara).

Finally at 11am on Sept 7 and 8 there will be several exciting fringe activities at the DFP lobby. Various arts groups will present their special offerings which make music and the arts accessible to the public.
