KUALA LUMPUR: Popular Hong Kong band The Wynners staged a one-night show at 8pm tonight at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, here.

Organised by Star Planet, the three-hour concert with 35 songs was part of the quintet's Farewell With Love Tour – which celebrated their 50-year journey in Cantopop and in appreciation of their loyal fans worldwide, Malaysia included.

The group, comprising lead vocalist Alan Tam, keyboardist and second vocalist Kenny Bee, guitarist Bennett Pang, bassist Danny Yip and drummer Anthony Chan, started their farewell tour at the Hong Kong Coliseum in August.

Recording seven sold-out shows, the group set a record as the Hong Kong band with the most shows held at the prestigious concert venue.

Tam, Bee, Pang, Yip and Chan are among the pioneers of modern Cantopop.

Beginning as an English language band, The Wynners were assembled by manager Plato Leung in 1973 out of an earlier incarnation of the group, the Loosers.

Bee, who was with the Sergeant Majors before joining the Wynners, was the only one not part of the original lineup.

The group became one of the most popular teen idols in Hong Kong.

Their first studio album, Listen To The Wynners, released in 1974, was a commercial success.

It included a Cantonese version of the Walkers' hit song Sha-La-La-La-La.

The next albums were equally successful, such as the 1976 release Some Kind Of Magic, which included Save Your Kisses For Me, a cover of the 1976 Eurovision winner by British pop group Brotherhood Of Man.

The Wynners also hosted their television show The Wynners Specials on Hong Kong Television Broadcasts (TVB) beginning in 1975 and starred in three feature films, Let's Rock (1975), Gonna Get You (1976) and Making It (1978).

In 1978, the group members went separate ways to focus on their solo projects.

Tam and Bee became two of the most popular Hong Kong stars in the 1980s.

The Wynners have reunited every five years to sold-out concert crowds.

On April 1, 2011, they reunited at the Artistes 311 Love Beyond Borders fundraising event set up by Jackie Chan to help tsunami victims in Japan.

As a run-up to their concert, The Wynners had a meet the fans session at Pavilion Bukit Bintang on Sept 27.
