KUALA LUMPUR: Award-winning film director Syamsul Yusof is keen to work on a film based on the legendary Mahsuri, as suggested by acclaimed actress Maya Karin.

In a post on his Instagram yesterday, the filmmaker shared a news article in which Maya, 42, was quoted as sharing her dream of playing the role of the legendary woman who lived in Langkawi in the late 18th century, who placed a curse on the island after she was wrongly accused and persecuted for adultery.

In the caption section, the 38-year-old Syamsul responded to the actress by saying: "Good idea, let's do it @maya_karin."

The post was liked more than 20,000 times and many fellow artistes also agreed with the two to get the ball rolling on the "proposed" project.

Earlier, in the interview, perhaps motivated by the success of Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan, Maya shared with the reporter of her dream of landing the role of Mahsuri in a film and that the film to be directed by Syamsul.

"The story of Mahsuri is really interesting as it has many layers of depth, from the folklore to historical points of view… here's hoping that there'll be a producer who'd want to do this… or maybe I'll have to produce this myself," said the actress who had worked with the director before in Munafik 2 and 3.
