KUALA LUMPUR: Besides a good storyline, a strong cast and great cinematography, music score also plays an important role in contributing to the success of a film, says composer and music engineer Santosh Logendran.

Responsible for producing the music score for the blockbuster Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan, Santosh, 30, said he was allocated with a small budget to do so since the producers did not expect the epic film would be a major hit.

But Santosh worked around the limited budget with his three-member team using electronic music.

"I knew I could come up with better pieces if we had a bigger budget. A big production like this needed bigger funds for the music score.

"But Syamsul (Yusof) was optimistic about this project, and I gave my best and came up with the score within six months," he said in a news report today.

Santosh said that live recording of certain musical instruments such as the rebab and serunai (Malay flute) would have been able to create a more fitting mood to match the theme of the movie.

He created the music score from his mini studio at home, since it was during the Movement Control Order period.

However, he said that it would have made a huge different if he had done so in a more professional recording studio instead.

Santosh won Best Sound Design at the 30th Malaysia Film Festival for Pulang and Best Music Score at the Boh Cameronian Awards show in 2015 and 2016.

He was also responsible for special sound effects for movies as Abang Long Fadil 1 & 2, Munafik 2, and KL Special Force.
