KUALA LUMPUR: The new reimagining of Scream, produced by Paramount Pictures, has reached the top of the North American box office, toppling Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Entertainment research and data company Exhibitor Relations reported yesterday that horror Scream earned US$30.6 million (RM127.8 million) over the last three days.

David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research called it a strong opening for the horror, even if it did not scare up numbers like Halloween 12, which opened to US$49.4 million (RM207 million) last October.

Nevertheless, Paramount managed to recoup its relatively modest US$25 million (RM105 million) budget.

Scream was released in the United States last Friday and is the fifth film in the Scream series. The first film also titled Scream premiered in 1996, followed by Scream 2 (1997), Scream 3 (2000) and Scream 4 (2011).

It is the first Scream film not directed by the late Wes Craven, who died in 2015 at the age of 77.

Scream stars Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding and Jenna Ortega, with special appearances by Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette from the original film.

Spider-Man took US$20.8 million (RM87 million) over the last weekend, followed by Sing 2 at US$8.3 million (RM34.7 million) and The 355 at US$2.3 million (RM9.6 million).
